Critical technologies and capabilities required for this application
Empower has played a major role in Force Protection and National Security by providing cutting edge, compact, ultra broadband power amplifiers for counter IED systems,
CREW IED jammers. These vehicle-mount and dismounted electronic warfare jammers are designed to prevent activation of Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (RCIED)
by effectively disrupting radio communications that trigger such devices.
Empower has a versatile product line and has become a leader in the design, development and production of Gallium Nitride (GaN) power amplifiers. Although Empower has many
product lines encompassing state-of-the-art Bipolar, MOSFET, LDMOS and GaAs FET devices, GaN has become the marquee technology for counter IED jammers.
Empower continues to work closely and has developed strategic relationships with GaN device manufacturers and has capitalized on using the latest thermally enhanced GaN
on Silicon Carbide ( SiC) devices available.
GaN’s increased power density (mm/W) has enabled Empower to reduce power amplifier sizes, minimize cooling and heat-sink demands and package more power per given volume.
With increased efficiencies Empower can deliver reliable, smaller and lighter broadband power amplifiers.
How Empower is positioned to support these applications
Empower’s GaN amplifier products are field proven and have exhibited a robustness to very demanding input waveforms and modulations associated with IED jammers, including
and not limited to Gaussian white noise modulation.
Empowers extensive GaN power amplifier products span the frequency range from 20 to 6000 MHz. The existing designs provide a solid and proven engineering foundation to work
with our customers in developing custom specific power amplifiers in the frequency ranges:
- 20 to 1000 MHz
- 1000 to 2500 MHz
- 2500 to 6000 MHz

Key Design Wins Capability Showcase
Empower has delivered over 30,000 RCIED jammers at production rates exceeding 1000 amplifiers per month.
Ruggedness
Higher breakdown voltages with GaN devices which withstand high peak voltage waveforms and modulations such as Gaussian noise.
Reliable operation when subjected to high voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) from the antenna which is a likely occurrence on a vehicle during combat.
GaN devices also come in smaller packages with higher power densities which enable the amplifiers to achieve smaller footprints and overall size and weight.
All hardware is subject to over-temperature, EMI and EMC, shock and vibration and all other environmental testing required.
Empower RF Systems has extensive experience with Multi-Function, Highly-Integrated Assemblies. Customer-specific requirements are met by incorporating Integrated Filters,
T/R switches, DC/DC Converters, Forward/Reverse Power detectors and RCV LNAs into the Amplifier.
